A day after Russian authorities investigated one of her homes, Ksenia Sobchak, a prominent figure in the Russian media, was discovered in Lithuania after traveling there on an Israeli passport, according to the head of Lithuania’s counterintelligence service.

Sobchak is well-known in Russia, where she has held a number of journalistic, public figures, and political positions over the years. She also has close ties to Vladimir Putin through her family.

However, Sobchak claimed on her Telegram channel that the search was politically motivated and cited a film she had produced on the use of torture in Russian prisons as evidence.

Earlier this month, TASS reported that Sobchak was the focus of a criminal inquiry over a report she had written that police believed to be “false,” even though it was stated that the material in question dealt with “state funding of festivals.”

She is the daughter of the late Anatoly Sobchak, Putin’s superior and friend who served as mayor of St. Petersburg in the 1990s. The two families were close and occasionally went on vacation together.

Despite her own involvement with it occasionally, her long-standing family relationship with Putin has been a cause of distrust among some of the anti-Kremlin opposition movement, much of which is now outside Russia.

According to TASS, which cited law enforcement sources, Sobchak departed Russia on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday by crossing the Belarus-Lithuania border after deceiving the Russian government by buying tickets from Moscow to Turkey and Dubai but never using them.

The chief of Lithuania’s counterintelligence agency, Darius Jauniskis, told the Ziniu radio station on Thursday morning, “Without a doubt, she is (in Lithuania)… I affirm the reality.”

She can enter Lithuania without a visa and remain there for up to 90 days as an Israeli citizen with a current passport, he continued.

In April, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Sobchak had become an Israeli citizen following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

With 1.4 million subscribers, Sobchak’s Telegram channel routinely posts articles that are critical of government policy.

She ran for the Russian presidency in 2018, garnering less than 2% of the vote in what her detractors criticized as a publicity ploy to give the impression that Putin won the election despite their being a contested race.

Sobchak claimed that she had sincerely wanted to win the competition because she was passionate about politics and enacting change.
